Hoipolloi offer a range of different workshops for students at schools, colleges and universities. Please see the Workshops page for more information.
Although Hoipolloi are a small company, we aim to host at least one work placement per year. In the past, our internships have started between July and September and lasted for about one year.
Any vacancies will be advertised on the blog and via our mailing list. But if you are interested in the position, feel free to write to us and we will make sure you are contacted when we open applications.
Please take some time to look through the website first and learn more about the company, then send us a copy of your CV with a covering letter, by post, explaining clearly what you hope to learn and achieve if you worked with us.
We are unable to accept unsolicited scripts from writers. Hoipolloi’s work is normally developed and written by the company’s core artistic team in collaboration with our performers. Improvisation is key to the development of the shows and the script is the end result of, and not the starting point for, the rehearsal process.
If you are based in the Eastern region and would like more information about script development and reading services, please contact Menagerie Theatre or the Writers Centre Norwich.
In general, Hoipolloi casts its shows from a core ensemble of actors, with whom we’ve worked for several years. As the performers are vital to the research, development and creation of any show, our productions are generally cast by invitation at least six months prior to the start of any tour.
Periodically, we run open workshops for performers who are interested in the way we make theatre, which also allow us to meet new performers. We will announce any future workshop dates on this website.
If you would like to send us your CV, we will keep it on file and make sure you are contacted as and when we organize workshops. For more information, please email info@hoipolloi.org.uk
Hoipolloi’s rehearsals normally remain private, but we try and share as much of the artistic process with you as we can, by posting updates from the rehearsal room on our blog and sharing backstage footage and company interviews on our YouTube Channel.
On occasion, works-in-progress performances or script readings may be presented as part of Hoipolloi MASH, our programme of one-off performances. We’ll announce any of these on the website. Please join our free mailing-list to be kept updated.
The rights for our all productions remain with Hoipolloi. There have been occasions in the past where we have allowed other companies to perform previous Hoipolloi shows. However, as scripts can often exist at various levels of usability, or in some cases don’t exist at all, it is difficult to allow this to happen on a regular basis.
If you need any further information, please contact us at the Hoipolloi office.
Hoipolloi often receive requests for advice or mentoring from other theatre companies. In principle, we are very happy to share our knowledge and experience with other companies but, of course, we also have to be careful that this doesn’t impinge too much on our own time.
At the moment, we are looking into the possibility of organising mentoring workshops, which will provide an opportunity for you to meet the Hoipolloi team and ask any questions you want. If you would like us to contact you as and when such workshops are set up, please join our mailing list where we will announce further details.
We will consider more formal or ongoing mentoring on a case-by-case basis, according to our other time commitments.
Periodically, we receive requests for interviews with company members or help with research. As with professional mentoring (see above), we are always happy to help wherever we can, but we also have to balance this with our other time commitments. Please email info@hoipolloi.org.uk for further information.
We hope that the website gives a comprehensive overview of the company and our activities; however, if you have any further questions about Hoipolloi, feel free to email us at info@hoipolloi.org.uk and we will do our best to answer your question.
