Introduction

Our shows celebrate the imagination and take audiences away from the everyday. They are packed with larger than life characters and a lot of laughs; humour is a key element of any show, ranging from the darkly comic to laugh-out-loud slapstick.

Attend a Hoipolloi show and we’ll draw you into the story, engaging you with the infectious nature and heightened theatricality of the performances. Our theatre involves the creation of very strong stage worlds that are unbound by the confines of reality.

Our work is celebratory, colourful, and playful, full of physical energy and visual excitement. Most importantly, it is always our aim to appeal to a wide range of people - to entertain them as well as to playfully challenge their sense of reality.

We are committed to breaking down traditional ideas of theatre, bringing in thinking from a wide range of cultures and creating shows which have a wide appeal.

Since 1994, when the company was formed by Shôn Dale-Jones (Artistic Director) and Stefanie Müller (Associate Director), we have toured 16 new shows nationally and internationally to a variety of venues.

In 2006, the company was awarded a Total Theatre Award for our production of Floating, which “agitated the boundaries of theatre, creating worlds within worlds of illusion and delusion”. At the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2007, Story of a Rabbit, our co-production with the New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich was awarded a Fringe First from The Scotsman.
