“A piece of genius…charming,
surreal, warm-hearted.”

The incredible story of the day when the Isle of Anglesey floated away from mainland Wales.

Floating is the first of Hoipolloi’s shows with Hugh, and has toured the world since opening in Belfast in Sept 2005. It is the story of when an earthquake separated the Isle of Anglesey from Wales, and the island went off on a voyage around the Atlantic Ocean.

Using a variety of multimedia devices and some dramatic re-enactments, Hugh and his collaborator, Sioned, take their audience on the journey with them. It’s a fantastical adventure with just enough supporting evidence to make it seem plausible.

Floating is the first of Hugh’s theatre shows and the wide-eyed, warm-hearted attitude he brings to a performance and an audience has been carried on into his other shows. His child-like way of looking and wondering at the world began here and continues through all of his later work.

In September 2011, BBC Radio 4 broadcast a new adaptation of Hugh’s story. The piece won Best Scripted Comedy Drama at the BBC Audio Drama Awards.

“I found myself utterly charmed by both Hughes and Rowlands as they played out this strange and beautiful story… A rewarding experience and well worth a watch.”
