Ablaze!

A fiery fairytale

Written and directed by Shôn Dale-Jones

Right before your very eyes
Under these dark and heavy skies
We will tell you a tale, a tale of woe,
A tale of friendship and a tale of foe...

When the villagers rush to war with the Ogres, they leave behind just one person, an innocent young girl named Alice. Feeling lonely, abandoned and wailing in sorrow, she befriends a mystical firebird that appears from another land.

Suddenly a lone ogre venturing into the village shatters the peace and Alice's life seems in danger. But when the ogre saves her from falling down a well, how can she truly repay his kindness and protect him from the baying mob of returning villagers?

All that can save him now is an act of great sacrifice and the firebird's magical powers.

Commissioned by Wysing Arts Centre for their annual fire event, Hoipolloi performed Ablaze! to nearly 1500 people on Saturday 15 May 2004. This epic spectacle was performed by a nine-strong cast of actors and musicians and created through Hoipolloi LAB and MASH, our own programmes of performance development, work-in-progress and one-off performances.
